The medical genre in the voiceover industry is a highly specialized niche, requiring a skilled voice talent with extensive knowledge of the industry. Debbie is a master medical narrator, fluent in the complexities of medical text and expert in meeting the specific requirements of the producers, creative directors and medical animators of this content. She is at home expressing the empathic and warm tones required by audiences including patients who may find medical terminology daunting. She is equally skilled at delivering the message to a professional audience, where a peer-to-peer tone is called for. The tongue twisting terminology is no trouble given Debbie’s nearly twenty years’ experience as a medical voice talent.

Political advertisements are tools that can spark conversation and debate about values; they can also be a clarion call to activism and fundraising. They also inform constituents about causes and campaigns that require their participation and vote. Debbie has voiced many political advertisements for national, state and local elections, including ones for Chuck Schumer and Cory Booker. These types of ads, which range from citizen testimonials and PSAs to positive-image candidate and negative ads, need someone who can inhabit a wide variety of personalities and speak in a way that is sincere, compelling and trustworthy. Whether you need an informative conversational tone, one that is inspirational and hopeful or one that is authoritative, Debbie can convey your political message powerfully and clearly.

Voiceovers for commercials have only an instant to win or lose a customer’s attention, and this is only possible with a voice that captivates the listener. Debbie takes the core message the client wishes to deliver and creates the perfect mood and tone for the brand, whether it be for beauty and cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, or even politics. She brings a human touch with an authentic feel that engages and excites. Her voice can portray your best girlfriend, a trusted doctor, a warm and caring mother, or a passionate activist.

Debbie’s secret is her keen ear for nuance, honed over decades of experience in voiceovers.

Animated explainer videos deliver messages in a way that is easy for the viewer to digest, usually in a fun and snappy style. They often work best when they carry a casual and conversational feel to explain a new process, program or product. Often these bite-sized bursts are written with humor and wit, and the narrator must achieve the perfect balance of efficiency and levity. Debbie’s enthusiastic yet polished approach to these fun communications ensures consumers and employees enjoy getting the message.

Communicating your company’s brand, mission and vision is an ongoing opportunity to connect with your clients, prospects and employees. Whether for internal or external distribution, corporate narrations require a vibrant and inspirational voice to make an impact. An experienced, gifted voiceover narrator knows how to align tone and pitch with your company’s philosophy. Choosing the perfect voice for your brand anthem will help touch your audience on an emotional level. Debbie has worked extensively with numerous global companies, using her voice to reach people in a deeply human way.

Her audio tour narrations for galleries and museums such as the Smithsonian, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Guggenheim Museum have a natural and engaging quality that makes you feel like you are being guided through the space by a close and knowledgeable friend. Family audio tours are amongst Debbie’s favorite projects because of the innovative and fun ways that works of art are brought to life. The characters, music and sound effects enhance the experience for families visiting museums, public spaces, monuments, and other cultural sites.

Visual imagery, music and voice must work hand in hand to tell a compelling story, but types of narration are as diverse as the stories themselves. An engaging, skilled voiceover talent is crucial to make stories come alive. Debbie has narrated in-show documentaries for the PBS series Treasures of New York, highlighting some of the most iconic buildings in New York City. She incorporated her character acting skills playing Louise, wife of modernist architect Erich Mendelsohn, in the award-winning documentary Mendelsohn’s Incessant Visions, the story of his life and career. Debbie analyses and then breathes life into each script with the perfect tempo, tone and mood. She tells the story in a way that matches the venue, achieves the artistic goal of the project, and captivates the audience.

Debbie’s theatrical background really comes alive when recording characters for video games. Video game voiceovers require a talent fluent in diverse accents and vocal nuance. Characters in games are often larger than life with complex personalities full of quirks and flaws. Debbie is able to find specificity in the vocal characteristics required by the characters, ensuring an enhanced story and gaming experience. She portrayed a middle-aged, middle class woman from 1950s New Orleans in Mafia III and an evil British Queen in The Lord of the Rings Card Game and even voiced an authoritarian German scientist in a deep staccato voice in 9 Clues 2: The Ward.

The voice that booms through an award ceremony in a banquet hall or theatre is usually referred to as the Voice of God (VOG). It commands the room’s attention with its rich, authoritative quality. Voiceover talent may narrate video profiles for award recipients and nominees or attend the ceremony in person to make announcements such as introducing the host of the event or requesting guests to take their seats. The VOG is a key and dynamic component of the night, demanding versatility of tone and color in every word.

Elearning narration makes it much easier to explain how to troubleshoot a product, explain protocols, and teach new skills without expensive in-person training seminars and conferences. The easiest way to achieve this is with a clear and engaging voice talent. Debbie brings energy and verve to her elearning narrations, with an approachable yet professional tone, ensuring the information is digestible and interesting.

Automotive Voiceover is a genre where seamlessly matching the voice to the brand is make or break. A car can be the emblem of a desired or attained lifestyle; often it can form part of one’s own self-image. For some, a car can evoke the adventure and freedom of the open road, or for others symbolize safety and security. Each type of car mirrors the potential buyer, so the voice that represents it needs to be carefully selected. Ferraris and Porsches require a voice embodying excitement, but also poise and elegance. Chevrolets and Fords need a voice with grit, stamina and strength. Hondas and Volvos need a voice that projects confidence, trustworthiness, and safety.

An Interactive Voice Response (IVR) telephony system is often the first interaction a company has with its prospective clients. We all know that first impressions count, and this first phone call can enhance or deflate a reputation. That’s why it’s crucial that the first voice a person hears when calling is a positive, welcoming embodiment of the company’s values, and while your callers are on hold, it’s an opportunity to create a positive experience, while increasing their awareness of your products and services. Debbie’s warm, professional manner makes the listener feel like their concerns and needs are the company’s top priority. Clients of hers note that she turns projects around quickly and provides updates to their systems as needed. They have the assurance that she will always be there for them.

A Voice that Bridges the Gap.

Debbie Irwin, Professional Female Voice Over Artist

Over her nearly 20 years in the VoiceOver business, Debbie Irwin has voiced thousands of projects for clients around the globe. She has been the voice of The Statue of Liberty, an evil British Queen (in the style of Cersei Lannister from the Game of Thrones), the ancient Egyptian Princess Isis (there’s a funny story there), and even that automated voice you hear when calling a company and wish you were speaking with a real person!

Debbie’s experience as a female voice-over artist ranges from highly technical and complicated medical narration to intimate storytelling in documentaries, becoming characters— large and small, young and old, nice and nasty— in video games, to being an engaging teacher for kids’ language development, corporate e-learning, and the ubiquitous commercial found on TV, radio, Pandora, the web, in stores, on planes and anywhere else you can imagine.

With this breadth of experience comes an in-depth knowledge of vocal techniques and skills essential for producing high quality, professional recordings. In her state-of-the-art, fully equipped sound-proof home studio she can accommodate directed sessions with casting directors, agents, ad agencies, creative directors, writers, production studios, and clients, all at once. She’s known for her playfulness, quick wit, expertise in her craft, fast turnaround, and is a delight to work with.

About Debbie

Professional voice-overs artists require excellence in many different skill sets. First, they need to have both vocal and acting training. It is just as important to understand how your voice and breathing work, as to how to convey a message truthfully for an audio medium. In addition to all the technical know-how, voiceover talent must be versatile and adaptable to different character traits. Voice over actors must be comfortable playing and improvising, and be able to come up with character voices and accents on the spot. They must be able to be flexible with the tone and mode of the content they present.

Though Debbie is often asked to embody the attitude and voice of an evil queen, she can portray mature and confident older women, as well as the warm, motherly caregiver. She is the recipient of NYWIFT’s Best Actress award for her portrayal of Ayn Rand in a short film entitled I: Ayn Rand. More than the acting chops, she has the experience in microphone technique, timing, nuance, cadence, and stamina, as well as the ability to collaboratively be able to take direction, which is all crucial to the process.

Debbie has all these attributes and skills in spades, but the area she excels in is medical narration.

The Expert in Medical Voiceover

Medical narration is a specialized niche in the voiceover world, one that requires a high level of skill and proficiency. Debbie works with global pharmaceutical companies and boutique medical animation firms, academic teaching hospitals and major universities to deliver just the right balance of intelligence, authority, warmth, and clarity to every project. Her years of lending her voice to everything from medical explainer videos for patients and medical professionals, to pharmaceutical marketing, to medical-legal recordings and more, are what make her the expert in the medical narration industry.

What People Say

Our client said it best, ‘Her delivery is powerful, emotional, beautiful. Very impressive.’ We will definitely work with Debbie again and would highly recommend her.

— Allen Banting

When you spend 30 hours working with someone, it’s safe to say you’re going to get to know them! How they work, how they respond to direction, how easy they are to get along with, how talented they are. Debbie threw herself into this project completely; she was keen to learn about the technological processes involved in making a text-to-speech voice, and it was clear that she cared as much about her relationship with myself and the team as she cared about the recording work itself.

In spite of the fact that this job had a narrow focus in terms of vocal style, Debbie brought a lot to the table. Her voice is uniquely rich, smooth, and resonant, and she delivers lines with skillful control.

Our entire script is read from sight. Voiceover artists often expect this to be a breeze, and it can be an unpleasant surprise for both parties when it turns out that this isn’t the case. However, Debbie’s cold reading skills were excellent, as well as her ability to pronounce often difficult foreign names.

In short, I have nothing but good things to say about working with Debbie. She is both a true talent and a wonderful person.

— Francesca Shaw, CereProc 2015

The Buddy Group had the pleasure of working with Debbie two years ago. The finished (and award winning!) video was terrific. Recently, our client changed the name of their venue and requested that we update the VO. Debbie managed to match her timing and performance to the original perfect; we didn’t have to re-time or re-edit a single frame. As VO talent goes, Debbie Irwin is a true professional and one of the best out there. I would recommend her for any project you might be planning.

— Mike Kirsch, Director of Video Production, The Buddy Group

I’ve worked with Debbie Irwin on a number of different e-Learning modules. She provided exactly the tone we were looking for — professional and approachable. She made very efficient use of our recording time and we required very few ‘do overs’ once we began. It seems like she just ‘got’ the ideas in the script much more quickly than other talent I’ve worked with, and knew how to impart that in her voice. I’m looking forward to our next project together.

— Susan Brier

A Voice of Culture with Stature and Style.

Debbie Irwin Voiceover statue bg

A Voice of Culture with Stature and Style.

Why Experience Matters

Debbie is sought after because she can deliver a range of vocal styles from a real person to a trusted doctor, pharmaceutical sales rep to hospital administrator. She has voiced them all and understands what is expected for medical voiceover needs. These kinds of narration need a voice that can reach their listeners, whether they be medical professionals or patients, by speaking in a way they can understand. A female voiceover talent who is familiar with the flow of these diverse scripts, who comes in prepared, asks smart questions, understands her audience, ensures that tongue-twisting terminology, Important Safety Information (ISI), and Fair Balance (FB) language are all made easy for the listener to hear, is the person clients love to hire.

Finding a Partner

Debbie’s deep dive into this genre means she understands the nuances of production timelines, the implications of the medical/legal review process, and the importance of collaboration with her clients. She knows its best to work closely with clients from the very beginning of the process in order to provide added value across the board. That could mean hiring additional voice actors for a multi-character eLearning course, sourcing royalty-free music for customization, or hiring a composer to create an original score so that the entire sound package is as impactful as the scientific messaging itself.

Debbie has worked with a diverse group of voice over actors, audio engineers, writers, composers and producers, and is confident that when hired, she has the resources and network of skilled professionals to assist in creating the best final product possible. She believes that working productively and cohesively with a highly skilled team ensures the best and most successful outcome.

Evolving Trends

With the healthcare industry changing every day, communicating health information in a clear and compelling way is more important than ever. Visual science storytelling now includes augmented reality, virtual reality, mobile apps, and speech applications. Debbie has worked with it all and is able to adapt to new formats with ease.

The one thing that remains at the very foundation of communicating all this vital information through voiceover is the human connection. That is what Debbie brings as a female voice over talent, both to the process of working together and to the project itself. She has a passion for the medical industry and an understanding of the text with all its nuanced needs to be communicated clearly. And as for that tongue-twisting medical jargon? That doesn’t make her sweat a bit!

So relax, the female voice that will bring your words to life is just a click away.
