Hire Medical Voiceover Talent: 7 Essential Tips

April 18, 2025 by Debbie Irwin

If you’re in the market for voiceover talent for medical narration, there are several key considerations to ensure you find the right fit for your project. Medical narration is a specialized field, demanding expertise, precision, and the ability to convey complex information effectively. Here are seven tips to help you make an informed decision when hiring voiceover talent for medical narration:

1. Evaluate Their Medical Narration Portfolio

Start your search by examining the voice actor’s website and portfolio. Look for ample quantities of high-quality audio samples and medical video samples showcasing their medical narration work. Pay close attention to pronunciation, articulation, energy modulation, and tone. These qualities are crucial in conveying complex medical information effectively. Establishing this baseline is your first step toward identifying the right talent.

2. Get Recommendations for Medical Voice Actors

Don’t hesitate to ask for recommendations from trusted colleagues, whether they work at your firm or in competing organizations. Voiceover professionals often recommend colleagues with specific expertise, and these referrals can be invaluable. By seeking recommendations, you’re more likely to find talent with proven expertise in medical narration.

3. Request Client References Specific to Medical Narration

A true professional comes prepared to enhance your project and make your job easier. When contacting the voice actor’s previous clients, ask questions about their ability to take direction, meet deadlines, communicate effectively, and contribute positively to the project. Inquire if they caught any errors or demonstrated a deep understanding of your goals. The difference between a good and great voiceover artist can have a significant impact on your project’s success.

4. Sample Their Medical Script Reading Skills

To ensure compatibility, request a sample reading of your script, particularly passages containing difficult words or complex medical terminology. Provide clear instructions for tone, tempo, and pronunciations. This sample will help you assess whether the voice actor aligns with your project’s requirements. Remember that minor adjustments are manageable, but major overhauls can be costly and time-consuming.

5. Understand Their Medical Content Preparation Process

Medical content often presents intellectual challenges, demanding a voice actor who is willing to thoroughly understand the topic. Ask the voiceover talent about their workflow process. Repeated script review and rehearsal are essential to address pronunciations, syntax, and meaning, ensuring a smooth and efficient recording session. Understanding the actor’s preparation process is critical to project success.

6. Assess the Voice Actor’s Professional Commitment

Consider whether the voice actor is a full-time professional or someone who moonlights in the industry. Timely revisions and updates are often necessary in medical narration due to evolving scientific information. Ensure that the talent you choose will be available for future collaboration. While nothing is guaranteed, a reliable and committed voice actor can provide peace of mind.

7. Test Their Recording Environment & Studio Quality

Before the official recording session, schedule a brief audio test with both the engineer and the voice actor to assess the quality and connection of their recording environment. This simple step ensures that the recording session will proceed smoothly and allows all parties involved to discuss the session flow in advance.

Assess the Studio Capabilities

Investigate the voice actor’s studio capabilities, as the quality of the recording environment significantly affects the final product. Key considerations include:

  • Microphone:

While the most expensive microphone is not necessary, a quality microphone is crucial. Common industry standards include the Sennheiser 416 and the Neumann TLM 103.

  • Recording Environment:

Ensure the voice actor has an appropriate recording environment, such as a dedicated booth or treated closet. Open areas with excessive echo can lead to audio quality issues.

  • Digital Audio Workstation (DAW):

The choice of DAW may not be critical, as all DAWs can record effectively. However, the specific DAW may affect editing and mixing capabilities.

  • Audio Interface:

The audio interface used can vary widely in price and quality. A seasoned professional will likely have high-quality equipment.

  • Connection Capabilities:

Verify that the voice actor can connect using platforms like Source Connect, Session Link Pro, ipDTL, Zoom or Teams,  to accommodate remote recording needs.

By considering these factors and conducting thorough due diligence, you can increase your chances of finding the right voiceover talent for your medical narration project. Whether it’s medical Mechanism of Action (MOD), Mechanism of Disease (MOD), MedEd, Pharma, or MedLegal content, finding the right talent is crucial for effective communication. If you need assistance in your search, I’m happy to help. Even if I’m not the perfect voice for your project, I can connect you with excellent options from my extensive network of professional VO talents.
