My home in NYC is across the street from City Hall. When I was walking in City Hall Park the other day I was taken with the public art installation. As the voice of The Statue of Liberty on the harbor cruise audio tour, I was immediately attracted to the exhibit, called “We The People”.
Constructed between 2010 and 2014, “We The People” is a 1:1 replica of Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi’s Statue of Liberty, recreated by 39 year old artist Danh Vo in about 250 individual pieces. Vo’s segmented version is faithful to the original, using the same fabrication techniques and copper material.
However, he never intends to assemble all of the pieces of the statue. Instead “We The People” invites us to experience this world-famous icon on a human scale, and to reflect on the meaning of liberty from multiple perspectives.
Gotta love it!
